3 Costly List Building Mistakes
When you start to build your list, which of course you should be doing right from the get go, you need to make sure that you go about it the right way. I see to many marketers in various niches making fundamental mistakes in their list building tactics. I could ramble on however let us get right at the heart of some of the mistakes that I see on a day to day basis.
#1. Not Using a Professional Autoresponder
As an email marketer it is vital that you choose a professional autoresponder provider to drive your email deliverability. Some of the reasons for setting up a remotely hosted autoresponder account are:
- Increased Deliverability – It would be a complete waste of your time writing a time consuming email, only for it not to be delivered to your complete list, or worse to no one. By using a professional provider, they will maximize the delivery rate. Plus you will be able to check your email prior to it being delivered to ensure that it passes the anti-spam test.
- Safeguarding Your Email Lists – Autoresponder providers all provide backups for your database just in case they become inaccessible or worse still corrupted. Enough said on this point! They will also ensure that you comply with CanSpam regulations, so that you will be safe from Spam complaints. You will also be able to set dates and times of when you want your emails to be sent to your subscribers.
#2. Poorly Constructed Squeeze Page
Without doubt having a well constructed squeeze page is a must to ensure that the “shop front” of your business leads the prospect into your autoresponder and email marketing system.
If it does not get your prospect attention you will have a long struggle ahead of you in building your list. Keep your squeeze page clean and simple. Give then just one option, either join or leave!
With this in mind you need to ensure that it loads quickly, and gets to the heart of the matter quickly without any fuss.
Note the following on the above squeeze page:
- Short attention grabbing heading (Red Lettering)
- Picture of me (Branding)
- Benefits of product (Answer to their problem)
- Picture of Ebook (Bribe)
- Call you action button
This is a good example of how you should construct your own squeeze page. In this example I used a Free Ebook to bribe them onto my list.
There are a number of other products that you could use as your bribe for example:
- Free Report
- Free Ebook
- Free Template
- Free Graphics Package
- Free E Course
- This list is endless!
#3. Failing to Split Test
Split testing your squeeze page is important as it ensures that you have a success. Even if you have paid for it to be done, there is no way that you can be sure how well it will be received by your visiting prospects.
A great way and so easy to use is Google Website Optimizer, this is a free tool that will help you run your splits tests with ease. You can sign up for a free account HERE
Here is a very important thing that you should remember, when split testing change only “one element at a time”, otherwise you will not get an accurate test result.
For example you could change the headline first then check your results.
I hope this article has been of some help to you, I will be following this up with further list building mistakes in the near future.
